Glycine test tablets for measuring ozone in pool water.
Ozone consists of 3 oxygen atoms (O3). It is an unstable molecule and after a relatively short time it breaks down either in the air or, when dissolved in water, into oxygen, O2, and an oxygen radical. The oxidizing effect of this oxygen radical is very strong, and a depot effect is excluded because the two radicals immediately combine to form O2. Ozone is produced directly on site by ozone generators and other required devices. Special rules and precautions are required because ozone is 10 times more toxic than chlorine. Ozone is therefore used only during a single treatment - outside the pool - and must be filtered out before further use (activated carbon). The maximum permitted concentration of ozone added to the pool is only 0.05 mg/l, so ozone alone is insufficient as a disinfectant and requires supplementation with other disinfectants - usually chlorine-based ones. Ozone kills bacteria, oxidizes organic contamination (e.g. urea), reduces chlorine consumption, and leaves no irritating residues behind. The best measuring device is usually the human nose, which can detect an ozone concentration of 1:500,000. However, ozone in combination with chlorine can be measured using the DPD method. By adding glycine, the ozone is eliminated, making it possible to measure chlorine alone, while the ozone content is determined from the difference.
