Treatment of pool water by saltwater electrolysis releases free chlorine and provides immediate disinfection. Water treated in this way does not smell of chemicals, because the system prevents the formation of chloramine, which causes the unpleasant odor. Pool water should be slightly salty: 3–5 g/l of water. Pool salt, or salt molecules (NaCl), are split into sodium (Na) and chlorine (Cl) by the saltwater treatment unit. This reaction is achieved at low voltage on the surface of the titanium electrodes inside the electrolytic cell.
