    Alkalinity (carbonate hardness) is the sum of basic substances dissolved in water that prevent sudden changes in pH. The optimal total alkalinity value ranges from 80 to 120 mg/l. It affects the effectiveness of disinfection, pH adjustment, the formation of precipitates from various components in the water, and the corrosion of metal parts. If the total alkalinity is too high, the pH is usually too high as well and shows a high level of stability, meaning it is difficult to change. If the alkalinity is too low, the pH is not stable, which causes large and frequent fluctuations.
